More History of Art

A friend of mine is going to a History of Art class and sent me this:

The art critic, Clement Greenberg,Clement_Greenberg

Clement Greenberg was an American essayist known mainly as an influential visual art critic closely associated with American Modern art of the mid-20th century.
Born: January 16, 1909, New York City
Died: May 7, 1994, New York City

once stated that the Avant-Garde

poet/artist “tries in effect to imitate God by creating something valid on
its own terms”. Centuries earlier, the Italian art historian, Bellori,
argued that perfect beauty in art cannot be obtained by merely imitating
nature but can only emanate from the realms of ideas developed in the
artist’s mind.

Gian Pietro BelloriBellori
Gian Pietro Bellori, also known as Giovanni Pietro Bellori or Giovan Pietro Bellori, was an Italian painter and antiquarian but more famously, a prominent biographer of artists of the 17th century, equivalent to Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century.
Born: 1613
Died: 1696
